Privacy Policy — Hydrology from Space

Last updated: [fill in date before publishing]

This policy describes what data the Hydrology from Space mobile app collects and how it's used. It was written to match exactly what the app's code does — not a generic template — so if the app's data handling changes, this page should be updated to match.

What we collect

Push notification token. If you choose to "watch" a station (tap the bell icon), the app registers a device push token with our notification backend, along with the ID of the station you watched. This is the only way we can send you a notification when that station has a new reading. If you stop watching a station, we unregister that token for it.

We do not collect your name, email address, or any other personal identifier. The push token is tied to your device/app installation, not to you personally.

Favorites. Stations you mark as favorites are stored only on your device (local app storage) and are never sent to our servers.

What we don't collect: we do not access your device's GPS/location, contacts, camera, microphone, or photos. The app has no user accounts, no login, and no advertising or analytics SDKs.

Third-party services

  • Station and satellite data is fetched from our own API (api.hydrologyfromspace.org) to display water-level readings — this is public hydrological data, not personal data.
  • Push delivery goes through Expo's push notification service, which needs the device push token described above to deliver notifications.
  • Map tiles are served by Mapbox to render the map itself. Mapbox's own privacy policy applies to that part of the connection: https://www.mapbox.com/legal/privacy

Data retention

Watched-station registrations are kept until you unwatch the station or uninstall the app. Favorites live only in local app storage and are removed if you uninstall the app.

Changes to this policy

If what the app collects changes, this page will be updated accordingly.
